What should wealth make possible later?

In late summer, people often think differently about time.

Maybe after a holiday, a conversation with parents, more time with family – or simply because everyday life became a little quieter for a moment. Many people then feel more clearly what financial planning is really about: not only wealth, but possibilities.

This is where longevity becomes relevant for financial advice. Not as an anxiety-driven topic. And not only as the question: “How long will the money last?” Because longer lives are changing something else as well:

What clients now expect from financial advice

This expectation is not a guess. In a recent European survey, 70 percent of high-net-worth clients said they want their advisor to address nonfinancial aspects of their lives – housing, care, caregiving, and lifestyle changes.

This does not mean that wealth managers need to become experts in care, housing, or lifestyle planning. But it does mean that financial planning is becoming more personal. And it begins earlier with questions that were often asked only much later in life.

The new question in client conversations

Traditional financial planning often asks: Will the money last long enough? Longevity advice adds another question: What should the money give me the freedom to do later?

For some clients, security means being able to live independently for as long as possible. For others, it means still being able to travel, help, invest, or start something new. For some, family is at the center. For others, independence, health, control, or legacy matter most.

Wealth is not only capital. It is also a means of enabling self-determination, quality of life, and flexibility.

Three questions for the next conversation

  • Which decision would you want to keep open at 75?
  • What would security mean to you if your health or living situation changed?
  • What should your wealth be for, if it is not only meant to last?
  •

These questions are personal – and financially relevant at the same time. Decisions about housing, health, family, or support later in life can have significant financial consequences.

Longevity planning is therefore not only about protecting against what might go wrong. It is also about preserving the choices clients want to have later in life. A portfolio does not only fit when it is mathematically optimized. It should also fit the life a client wants their wealth to make possible.

How BQ Advisory supports this

BQ Advisory helps wealth managers make these priorities more visible in a structured way – through insights into values, risk perception, preferences, and decision behavior. This makes financial planning not only more robust from a technical perspective, but also more personal and more relevant. Not as a replacement for traditional financial planning. But as a behavioral layer where advice becomes more human.

Key takeaway

Longevity advice does not begin with how long the money will last, but with what freedom it should create later on.

When wealth passes on, so does the advisory relationship. In September, we turn to the next generation of clients – and why well-informed young investors want advice not less, but differently.
